There are issues occurring at work that cause these mental health experiences, but then when you add it all the things occurring in society, it's a wonder that the rates aren't worse. It is so sad.

In the public sector we had more than half of our staff who were considered essential and did not have a remote work option. They made sure the water was clean and distributed, kept trash picked up, fixed streets and repaired pumps and pipes, distributed vaccines and tests. I've worked in the office throughout the pandemic and didn't feel unsafe because of the way it was handled by my employer (health care facility). CARLA WHITE
01:01:47
It's crazy!
Sharmell Beckford-Richardson
01:01:54
@Eileen, you'd be surprise as to how many leaders are unaware. I requested for my employer to have the staff take the Mental Health First Aid to help our colleagues can be aware of the signs.
Stacy Mitchell

That part!

01:02:00
All true!

Missele Vegas
01:02:33
Yes! Providing the employee with the EAP information is the first step, and U also engage with the spouse, if the employee is married. Keep checking in with the employee regularly, see if the accommodations made are working
Paige Blose
01:02:33
oh SO MUCH!
Michele Faulkner
01:02:34
We get a lot of feedback that EAP is ineffective. What should we look for when securing an EAP provider?
Cynthia Bennett
01:02:35
Language and tone!

@Karen Thanks!

or "my job is killing me"...
Susan Vidal
01:04:15
@Cindy sending you support, I can only imagine -
Sharmell Beckford-Richardson
01:04:17
When they do, I always say, you don't know what you're saying.. My son died from suicide... and that Is why I am so passionate..
CARLA WHITE
01:04:22
Yes, they may address, but still pretend there are no issues
Jen Robinson
01:04:23
Thank you for sharing this. It is so true!
Regina Clouse
01:04:23
Language and understanding the true meanings behind what they say is so important.
Lucretia Strazzeri
01:04:28
Have found that many managers need constant reminders that mental illness is an actual illness, and not a chosen weakness. Great to have the concrete references here - thank you.
Shawn Dilfield
01:04:38
I used to work with someone whi did the gun to the head motion whenever he was frustrated with any process.
Ellen Markey

Verlinda Henning
01:04:44
@Sharmell My heart goes out to you.

01:04:46
geo- and company culture makes such a difference in how we approach this issue
Susan Vidal
01:05:03
@Sharmell - thank you for your openness and I can not even imagine - but your passion is coming through on how important this is - and important just doesn't seem to be a strong enough word
Page Bradham
01:05:20
due to recent school/workplace violence, I'm specifically working to STOP using "shoot" or "pull the trigger" or other gun language in everyday conversations
Ellen Markey
01:05:38
@page.... good for you
Verlinda Henning
01:05:40
Bullet points bothers me now.
Michele BiringPani
01:05:41
It's so true. We have to be real with the people we are with 35+ hours each week.
Susan Vidal
01:05:41
I think learning the language and using real empathy (with no retaliation even subtle) is critical too.
Roxine Green
01:05:42
sending virtual hugs and support to Sharmell
Petina Cheek
01:05:44
@Page - great idea
Tabitha Bean
01:05:51
@Page - yes
Joy Spahr
01:06:01
I hate when people use ADD as a joke when they are distracted or call someone who has a neat desk OCD. I hear it daily.
Michele BiringPani
01:06:15
It is hard to be real and also filter for work.
Tabitha Bean
01:06:20
@Joy - yes, I hear those all the time
Sharmell Beckford-Richardson
01:06:24
@Verlinda, thank you... that's why I am compassionate with people.. mindful of how I speak and try to teach people self awareness

01:07:30
my job was not helping my mental or physical health was forced ro step away due to vaccine mandate in NJ asked for a temp waiver due to my mental health and was told that's not a good reason. Was best thing to happen to me. in a much stronger mindset and ready to get back into a new role
Ellen Markey
01:07:42
i always think talking about when you're not 100% is showing STRENGTH -- think about HOW HARD it is to do it. When people are showing you that they are struggling... that is one of the things I point out... sometimes it helps

@Susan Vidal.. You are so welcome... When she mention PTSD... I tell people that it doesn't only relate to combat... but combatting everyday life... and as people... we bring it to work.. and what kind of measurements are our leaders providing.

Leaders have to show up and lead by example.
Michele BiringPani
01:09:35
@Ellen I actually posted something similar on FB about a month ago. That we need to be kind because kindness is strength. It is sharing your strength when others need some strength to hold on.
Sharmell Beckford-Richardson
01:09:36
Like Melissa said.. what is your call to action.. Our call to action is Educating... But they also expect us to present...

Great question Clarissa!
Isabel Candelas
01:09:46
If people took care of their gut health and didn't eat all of the processed food, sugars, high carbs, reduce stress and sleep 8 hours their mental health would be good. People need to be educated.
Candace Chavigne
01:09:56
I have a meeting/hard stop at 2PM ET, so I will have to drop a minute or two prior to that time. Regarding HRCI credit hours, how will we get the code etc for the credit hours?
Susan Vidal
01:10:00
I love that what is the WHY we are doing this at the org
Tabitha Bean
01:10:10
Yes, @Isabel, gut health makes a big difference
Michele BiringPani
01:10:13
@Daniela Leaders absolutely need to show what is appropriate behavior.
Stacy Mitchell
01:10:18
Yikes, Isabel! I appreciate that but that's not all of it.
Eileen Brooks
01:10:19
Trauma is so subjective and individual - everyone who experiences it needs to be heard, respected and supported. I believe this is what helps to heal the wounds.
cindy herrmann
01:10:21
thanks Susan and Michele. I believe things happen for a reason and the culture I was in was toxic .I am so much stronger for it.

@Isabel, you have a good point, but there is much more involved in mental health than just gut health and rest. That stance is also insensitive. People who have battled with depression for years, don't want to hear that they should just stop eating sugar!
